Facing an emergency

Along with the importance of first aid training, the skills and knowledge from the classes are valuable during emergencies.

When the emergency crew arrived at the rail tracks where the incident occured, it was around 6:10 PM.

After a call, two police officers were already at the scene before the EMS. The officers provided timely intervention with first aid care to control the bleeding.

The officers applied a tournique on the injured leg of the child to place pressure and stop the bleeding. This quick move was crucial in saving the life of the child.

Before the incident occured, there were four young children at the time of the accident. In a release by the Hamilton police, the girl was believed to be playing near the rail tracks with friends. It is also likely that the children were attempting to jump onto the rail tracks while the train was moving at a slow pace.

Sadly, the child tumbled on the rail tracks and her leg was run over by the train, resulting in a severe injury. When the emergency team arrived, the girl was transported to a hospital to undergo surgical intervention.

Awareness of prompt first aid

Although such incidents rarely occur, it is tragic if one happens. At present, there is a neighborhood culture of awareness where families and parents and even schools try to work on increasing awareness of the tracks. Generally, the priority is community education on how serious it is as a safety concern.
