The resuscitation of 2 Newfoundland hockey players highlights the importance of public defibrillators.
It was the second case of heart attacks at a hockey rink where another player was saved with CPR. The players who suffered heart attacks in both cases are recovering.
Importance of public defibrillators in sports arenas
The 2 incidents brought attention to the usefulness of having people who are trained in CPR and other lifesaving techniques. It also highlighted the importance of easy access to public defibrillators or AEDs.
At the present, there are defibrillators installed in every hockey rink in Newfoundland and Labrador, but there is a push from a local group to have them installed in places other than areas where people play sports.
According to Mary Ann Butt, CEO of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador, every stadium in the province must have a life-saving device and must be in all buildings used by the public.
