Islanders honored for delivering life-saving CPR

Two Prince Edward Islanders were awarded the Canadian Red Cross Rescuer Awards for saving a man who collapsed during an auction in Kensington two years ago.

Thomas Smallman, a trained firefighter performed CPR with Marlene Lawrence, an auction house employee until the arrival of the paramedics. Smallman shared that most people at the event froze when the man collapsed.

They checked for a pulse and there was none. The earlobes of the man were purplish-blue as well as the lips. CPR was started and in just a few minutes, some color was restored.

Importance of first aid training

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and using an automated external defibrillator (AED) can save a life. Prompt delivery of life-saving techniques improves the chances of survival during emergencies.
