Worst COVID-19 outbreak ends in La Loche

The active cases of COVID-19 in the northern village and a nearby First Nation have recovered, ending a three-month ordeal.

An outbreak in a northern Saskatchewan village that accounted for almost a third of all diagnosed COVID-19 cases in the province appears to be over. The last active case in the village of La Loche was deemed recovered on Wednesday, a full three months since the first case was identified on April 15.

The outbreak was considered so bad that the provincial government imposed an unprecedented ban on all travel deemed “non-critical” into the entire northern half of Saskatchewan.

La Loche and Clearwater River are included in the vast far north region used by the province to identify case locations. The region recorded 339 cases to lead the province, even though it has by far the fewest people.
