Two communities surrounding Calgary will not introduce bylaws for the use of face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Airdrie city council decided against a face mask bylaw while Okotoks officials delayed a decision for a mandate for face coverings.
According to the Mayor of Airdrie, the council’s split decision came down to trusting residents to take necessary precautions, with the potential for an official mandate down the line if active case numbers in the city reach the threshold of more than 50 per 100,000 residents.
The town of Okotoks took a similar path, deciding to punt the decision on a face mask bylaw to a mid-August council meeting.
Debate on a proposed bylaw in the town south of Calgary that would mandate face mask in the municipally owned indoor spaces, including transit, will continue next month.
