CPR was given to a toddler after being pulled from an icy creek. A 22-month-old Pennsylvania boy whose lifeless body was pulled from an icy creek was resuscitated after an hour and 41 minutes of CPR and was able to survive without any lingering effects.
Prompt and continued intervention
A neighbor found Gardell caught up in a tree branch with water gushing around him. Moments later, an ambulance crew arrived – he had no pulse and CPR was started.
Resuscitation efforts continued without any breaks for 101 minutes – in the ambulance, at the community health care facility, aboard a medical helicopter and lastly in the emergency room.
At the right place
The body temperature of Gardell was around 25 degrees C when he arrived. The boy’s profound hypothermia was considered as an advantage that significantly reduced his metabolism and provided his organs a certain degree of protection from cardiac arrest.
