Despite the increasing cases of COVID-19 and the implementation of measures to curb down the spread, some people fail to follow and even gather over the protests against the government. Over a dozen tickets were handed out at a Montreal protest against the proposed province-wide curfew on Saturday evening.
The Montreal police stated that 17 tickets were handed out at the gathering, which started at 7:30 PM and soon violated the new curfew, which went into effect at 8 PM.
Police were able to stop several protestors, but a spokesperson stated that no arrests were made. The demonstration started on Mount Royal East, winding down several streets before the SPVM officers dispersed the crowd at St-Andre and St-Gregoire.
It was one of the several protests planned across Quebec. In Sept-Iles, the Surete du Quebec stated that around 20 vehicles gathered at 7:45 PM but were dispersed by police soon after.
The group responsible for planning the gatherings called for the end of the “state of emergency,” stating that they stand “against curfews and abusive measures” by the government.
Saturday marks the first day of Quebec’s new curfew policy that was unveiled by the province on Wednesday in an attempt to limit the explosive spread of COVID-19.
