A man is speaking out after a bus driver allegedly abandoned her to deal with a man in medical distress.
The woman, who identified herself as Robyn was riding a bus through the Downtown Eastside when she saw a man suffering from what she feared was an overdose. The man was not breathing or moving and it seemed like a serious situation. Robyn made a quick decision that the person needed help.
The unconscious man was at a bus stop near East Hastings Street and Jackson Avenue. Robyn approached the bus driver for help. She shared that his response troubled her.
The bus driver seems inconvenienced and frustrated about the situation. A concerned passenger shared that she also asked the driver to call 911 but he told her to make the call instead. After she stepped off the bus to check the man, the driver allegedly drove away.
TransLink received a complaint on how the situation was handled and has launched an investigation. The drivers are trained to call TransLink’s dispatch center when they see someone in trouble on or near transit, and that operators will then dispatch for emergency services.
