Two county paramedics in Renfrew are spreading the news about the importance of CPR. It is always a matter of life and death for many individuals including their 3-year old son.
The 3-year old Archer Hackett is always accompanied by a portable AED or automated external defibrillator. According to Sean Hackett, Archer’s father, his son might have a sudden cardiac arrest while eating cereals in the morning or while playing.
Archer was born with a congenital heart condition specifically Long Q-T syndrome that disrupts the electrical system of the heart. The child was only 5 weeks old when he experienced his first cardiac arrest.
Familiarity with first aid and CPR
According to Hackett, his child was dead for around 4 minutes and was revived. Both parents are paramedics with Renfrew County and knew exactly what to do to revive their son. Sean executed CPR while Roxanne got hold of the AED the hospital has given and delivered a shock to his heart to restore its pumping.
Since then, Archer has a pacemaker but always at risk for cardiac arrest. For 3 years, the parents have taken shifts in monitoring him, but it was in September where these shifts will end.
According to Hackett, Archer will be starting school where I cannot be there if something will happen. It is vital that people around him must know CPR especially the principal and staff of Archer’s school. They have volunteered their time to undergo first aid and CPR course.
Awareness of first aid training
With the increasing cases of cardiac arrest that not only affects adults but also children, basic first aid skills are vital. Enrolling in a first aid course is a good investment that will not only benefit your family but also allow you to help others in need during emergencies.
