There are reasonable criticisms that can be leveled against face mask ordinances. This includes the civil liberties and enforcement concerns or the fact that it does not target more problematic behavior such as private parties or crowded bars where people are drinking.
There is one argument against face mask ordinances that is taken far more seriously than it deserves – the idea that we cannot mandate masks since it may turn out to be a permanent requirement.
Obviously, we do not know what the future holds with regard to the COVID-19 virus. Take note that none of the face mask requirements that emerged during the 1918-1919 flu pandemic became permanent.
The “what if the temporary becomes forever?” argument is a cop-out. A proposed public health measure must be evaluated on its effectiveness and whether there are any overlooked potential weaknesses or unintended consequences.
