Despite provincial and federal health officials strongly recommending people wear non-medical masks in public spaces to combat the spread of COVID-19, a Keremeos, B.C. business owner is promoting the opposite advice.
The owner of the One Eyed Budgie Gift Shop, Dave Shearer placed signage at his shop that says mask-wearing is prohibited inside the establishment.
The sign was posted by the owner one month ago and has also converted half of his art gallery into a “truth center” disputing evidence-based public health recommendations and restrictions.
Shearer would not say what his sources of information are and disputes suggestions his actions are irresponsible. He added that he will not stop customers from entering his store if they decide to wear a mask.
Shearer stated that no safety protocols are implemented at his business. They do not observe physical distancing and have not erected Plexiglass barriers. The gift shop has never undergone a public health inspection and he has not received any warnings or fines.
When reached for comment, Interior Health stated that the public health team will follow up with the business owner.
The BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) stated that wearing a non-medical, cloth mask or face covering can play a role in preventing the spread of the novel coronavirus.
