The 3 performed CPR and utilized an AED to keep a 62-year old man alive. According to Lisa Wass, she does not know the identity of a Good Samaritan who helped save her father’s life.
Her father, John Tomchuk was loading groceries into his vehicle at Preston Crossing’s Walmart in Saskatoon when he went into cardiac arrest. His father fell and he could not recall anything other than thinking that something is wrong.
Saving a life
According to Wass, her 62-year old father collapsed on the ground in front of the store where 2 off-duty health workers and an unknown person found him. The off-duty workers initiated CPR while the person ran into Walmart to get an AED.
There was no available AED in Walmart. The person ran to a nearby store Cabela’s and found an AED there. It was the AED that saved his life. Wass was told by a paramedic on the scene.
The EMS shortly arrived and continued to treat Tomchuk. He gained consciousness and was alert before transported to a healthcare facility in an ambulance.
Wass was grateful for the rapid thinking of those who helped her father. Tomchuk is currently in critical care in a hospital.
Importance of first aid training
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and using an automated external defibrillator (AED) can save a life. Prompt delivery of life-saving techniques improves the chances of survival during emergencies.
