A 26-year old Abbotsford man drowned after jumping into Cultus Lake from a cliff. According to Chilliwack RCMP, a friend of the victim called 911 to report that his friend jumped into the lake and did not resurface.
Dangers of cliff jumping
Based on the statement of the police, the fatal jump was recorded by one of the four friends who were cliff-jumping that day.
According to Const. Tracy Wolbeck, the first male climbed up to around 80 feet on the cliff and was recorded to enter the water in an awkward position. The man descended into deeper water and did not resurface.
The body of the man was retrieved at around 7:30 PM by an RCMP dive team with assistance by the Chilliwack search and rescue volunteers who arrived earlier with 2 boats. Based on the investigation, there is no indication that alcohol was a contributing factor to the drowning incident.
