Horse-drawn wagon incident left victims in need of first aid

The crisis teams helped families after a crash with a horse-drawn wagon. The incident occurred at Ochapowace First Nation which injured up to 15 people, mostly children.

Based on the RCMP news release, Esterhazy RCMP responded to the incident. The crash occurred on a grid road off Highway 247 in the Round Lake region.

Unexpected ordeal

The police figured out that 2 horses pulling a wagon carrying several children spooked and broke into a gallop. This caused the wagon to cross a ditch and suddenly stopped in some trees which injured some of the passengers that required basic first aid.

According to the Saskatchewan Health Authority, 15 people were under treatment at a healthcare facility. Nine were already discharged while 6 remain in the hospital. The injuries sustained were not life-threatening.

The police stated that the STARS Air Ambulance responded to the scene for one potentially serious injury.

Safety measures

The wagon ride was part of an activity during the final day of the McKay Camp which is a yearly family-oriented camp by the Ochapowace Nation in the Qu’Appelle Valley. The wagon was on the way back to the camp when the crash occurred.

According to Denise Beaudin, interim director of operations for Ochapowace Nation, the wagon was carrying 18 youths and some adults. The crash sent several youths flying off from the wagon.
