A collision took the lives of 6 people including 2 journalists from the United States. The accident occurred on the Icefields Parkway close to the Honeymoon Lake campground. A van transporting 5 family members from Louisiana and Texas was heading north when it crashed with a southbound vehicle. Both vehicles caught fire.
Devastating ordeal
All passengers in the 2nd vehicle died but there are no details on their identities. The 2 Americans in the van died at the scene while 2 other members of the family were taken to a healthcare facility. A 2-year old in the van did not sustain any injury.
A 3rd vehicle moved off the road to avoid the crash and 2 people in the vehicle ended up with minor injuries.
Several passing motorists pulled over to assist in pulling out people from the vehicles including a retired firefighter from Australia.
On the rescue
Some people were performing CPR while others were offering survivors something to drink and blankets. The 2 men who were injured died on the scene.
According to the STARS air ambulance service, a 26-year old woman was transported to Edmonton in severe condition. The Alberta Health Services stated that another woman was transported to Jasper hospital in a stable state.
