A Shelburne County lobster boat captain was given CPR after he was pulled overboard. Based on the report by Barrington RCMP, Larry Wayne Sears, 64-years old was hauling lobster pots along with 2 crew members when the trawl line became ensnarled in the hauler. When he attempted to clear the line, he was dragged overboard.
Sears was wearing a personal flotation device but it was badly entangled in rope and pulled from the water by the crew of another fishing boat that came to the scene after its crew heard the call for help on the radio.
The search and rescue technicians from Clarks Harbour performed CPR and were assisted by the SAR techs who lowered from a Cormorant helicopter.
At the time of the incident, the seas were 3-4 meters and winds of more than 25 knots. These factors hampered the efforts of the search and rescue crews. Despite the attempts to resuscitate the man, Sears was declared dead shortly after the vessel arrived in West Head.
Do I need first aid training?
Accidents can happen without any warning and the best way to be prepared to handle emergencies is to enroll in a first aid course. The immediate delivery of appropriate first aid care and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can significantly increase the chances of survival.
