Availability of AEDs

Cardiac arrest triggers the heart to abruptly stop beating due to an electrical issue and considered a medical emergency. Rapid response to restart the heart using a defibrillator can mean the difference between life and death. It is vital to provide bystanders easy access to an automated external defibrillator (AED).

Based on research, they have listed the top prime sites to place AEDs. This allows a bystander with visual and audio instructions in delivering a shock to restart the heart until the arrival of the paramedics.

The listed sites include Starbucks, Tim Hortons, Second Cup coffee shops, ATMs of largest banks, Green P public parking lots and Subway sandwich stops. Tim Hortons which has more than 300 outlets in Toronto ranks the first.

Most cases of cardiac arrest occur in public areas or at home. In studies, around less than one in 10 people suffering from cardiac arrest outside a hospital survive.
