For those who are hoping to do away with the face masks when visiting stores and other businesses, you might think again.
Experts agree with the remarks made by Ontario Premier Doug Ford reminding Canadians that companies and businesses have the right to ask customers to wear a face-covering or mask. Any business has the right to refuse anyone. The public should wear a face shield. Two large grocery chains have adopted the “no mask, no service” policy as a way to limit the spread of COVID-19.
Longo’s and T&T supermarkets, Air Canada and Uber released statements indicating that shoppers, travelers, and rides should abide by the mandatory policy at their stores and businesses.
Businesses have the legal responsibility to create a safe working environment and if having people wear masks is a reasonable accommodation to provide a safe environment, the retailer can refuse entry to those who will not wear masks.
According to the City of Toronto spokesperson Diala Homaidan, it has been confirmed in an email that the “no mask, no service” policies do not contravene any bylaws, but these rules are not a requirement of business licensing and are left to the discretion of individual companies. Nevertheless, businesses that implement such policies might face concerns from Canadians with health conditions that are worsened by masks.
