Boy, 15 dead after a hit-and-run incident despite first aid

A 15-year-old boy is dead after a hit-and-run incident that happened near Lockport, Manitoba, in Winnipeg.

According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, two 15 year old boys were riding their bikes on the shoulder of Donald Road near Highway 9 in the municipality of St. Andrews when a vehicle suddenly change its direction off the roadway and hit the two boys. They were thrown into a ditch. Some bystanders immediately provided first aid on the boys but the other boy was not revived, he died on the spot. The other boy was taken by paramedics to the hospital for further treatment.

According to the mayor of St. Andrews, George Pike, the community is trying to piece out what happened on that day.  He does not have ideas about the names of the boys but when their names are released, St. Andrews will support the families of the boys.

According to witnesses the boys were hit within meters of the St. Andrews Fire Hall. EMS or emergency medical services and fire fighters arrived in the area and provided first aid on the boys.

According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the driver escaped by foot when his vehicle got stuck up in the ditch. They used dogs in running after the suspect. They found the suspect inside a vehicle on Donald Road. The suspect is a 29 year old man from Calgary. The police believed that the vehicle was stolen in Winnipeg and the driver was high on drugs when he hit the two boys. The man is facing multiple charges in relation to the accident.

A man named Brent Polson lives near where the incident happened. According to Polson, he was coming home at about 11 in the evening when he saw flashing lights of police cars near his driveway. He thought something was wrong when he saw the St Andrews Fire Department and more police cars arrived in the area. The two boys that were hit could be his neighbors.

In recent years, the community has already experienced losing other youth being killed in collisions. The next day the only sign that can be seen in the area was a temporary stop sign, the previous sign was destroyed during the collision.
