As COVID-19 cases rise throughout British Columbia, more than 80 doctors and dentists are pushing the provincial government to implement a mandatory face mask policy.
One of the reasons is that it is getting harder to maintain physical distancing. The group has outlined a plan with the acronym, ACT which stands for “All indoor spaces outside the home” Crowds, and Transit.
In the letter by the group, it highlights the desire not to enforce with penalties, but rather use education, recognizing that there would be some exceptions to the mask mandate such as those with medical conditions and disabilities as well as young children.
The best way to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is to maintain physical distancing, proper hand hygiene, and wearing a face mask. It is time for a mandatory mask policy since without one, people will not wear them.
According to an Angus Reid Institute poll in July, 55% of Canadians wear a face mask most of the time in public, but 74% stated that they are fine with a mandatory mask policy if it was implemented in their community. It is difficult to maintain physical distancing with so many people returning to work.
