Tips on how to use a non-medical mask during Stage 2

As Eastern Ontario moves into the second phase of reopening, people are going to public areas more often and you might find it hard to observe a minimum distance from others.

One way to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is to wear a mask. It is true that it is going to be hard for people to maintain distancing of more than 6 feet, as restrictions start to ease.

The World Health Organization clarified its position on the asymptomatic spread. They stated that it is possible for someone who is not showing symptoms to spread the virus even if infected.

The problem is that a person can be asymptomatic. It simply means that he/she does not show any symptoms in a period of time before he/she starts to manifest the disease itself. When maintaining a safe distance in public is not possible, you can still help prevent the spread. If infected with COVID-19, wearing a mask can protect others.

What is the correct way to wear a mask and how often it should be washed?

It depends on the material and how often it is used. If it is a good cotton material that is fairly strong, it can withstand being washed regularly. It can be washed daily. When washing the mask, wear rubber gloves. It must be washed by hand so that you can use hot water and soap.

Are filter inserts or paper towels necessary?

It is vital to maintain a balance between filtration and the protective effectiveness of the mask. If you are not comfortable when using it for a long time, you should not continue.

Is it okay to hand a mask from the car mirror?

Car mirrors are not a suitable spot for your masks.

How to safely store a mask and how to wear it safely?

Your mask should be stored in a dry, zipped plastic bag away from direct heat. Before taking it out of the bag, always wash your hands.

You must be careful to pull it out just with the elastic strings or loops. When removing the mask, you must wash your hands first, hold only by the elastics, and put it back in the plastic bag.
