The officers did not commit any offense. The provincial police watchdog determined that the RCMP officers did not commit any offense when a man was shot and killed at the Departure Bay ferry terminal.
Doing the right thing
The suspect who was being arrested shot himself in the head at the same time the 2 police officers shot the suspect in the chest. The suspect raised his gun and shot himself in the head while surrounded by the police.
The police were advised that a vehicle, reported stolen in a violent car-jacking in Penticton was found on a B.C. Ferries vessel. The police positioned their vehicles and the suspect vehicle was separated from other ferry traffic and instructed to stop.
Based on the report, the suspect sustained a serious head injury and 3 gunshot wounds to his abdomen, one on the collarbone and one on his left bicep. The paramedics reported that the victim had a pulse upon the assessment and given appropriate first aid care but later declared dead around 20-30 minutes after transferred to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.
