COVID-19 variant from South Africa found in Alberta

As COVID-19 continues to spread all over the globe, the discovery of a new variant might result in detrimental changes. A different strain of the COVID-19 virus that originated in South Africa has been found in Alberta according to the province’s top doctor.

The announcement was made by Dr. Deena Hinshaw on social media stating that the case had been detected in a person who had a recent travel trip. It is believed to be the only case of its kind in Canada and the patient is isolating from others.

The Public Health Agency of Canada confirmed that the Alberta case was the first confirmed case of the variant in all of Canada. The individual is currently in quarantine and there is no evidence at this time that the virus has spread to others.

The current health measures are just as effective in preventing the spread of the variant. It is not known exactly where the case was detected in the province.

Late last year, South Africa’s health department stated that a new genetic mutation or coronavirus had been found in the nation and was connected to a recent surge in cases there.

Experts suggest the variant is approximately 70% more infectious than the common strain of COVID-19.
