Five citizens were recognized for saving the life of a man with CPR who jumped off the Mission Bridge. The 5 citizens – Roger Williams, Martin Hanle, Jessie Garrison, Ron Thomas, and Heather Hanle were acknowledged by the Abbotsford Police Board for their heroic efforts.
Watery ordeal
They were in vehicles when they saw a man park his vehicle mid-span on the bridge, got out, and jumped into the fast-moving, frigid waters. Williams is a member of the Mission Search and Rescue while Garrison is a registered nurse. They pulled over, got out of their vehicle, and looked over the bridge railing, and saw that the victim was still moving in the water.
The four got back into their vehicles and drove to the Mission Harbour Boat Launch to find a boat to use to rescue the man.
Once they located the victim, Williams and Martin pulled the man from the water and Garrison initiated CPR. They arrived back at the boat launch where Heather helped Garrison with CPR until the arrival of the paramedics. Sadly, the man did not survive.
