CPR delivered by firefighters on a colleague in cardiac arrest

Steve Sawatzky was given CPR when he went into cardiac arrest. Around 2 dozen Winnipeg firefighter-paramedics took turns in delivering CPR on one of their own for almost an hour after he collapsed at a work barbeque at Tinkertown.

After facing issues with the on-site automated external defibrillator (AED), his co-workers took turns in performing CPR to keep Sawatzky alive for almost an hour. Upon the arrival of the ambulance, Sawatzky was transported to St. Boniface Hospital where he is recovering.

It was a miracle

For Kim Sawatzky, the incident came as a shock to the family. Her husband was a healthy, fit person who ate well and regular exercises.

Steve does not have any memory of the emergency, but he stated that the family was overwhelmed by what his co-workers did for him.
