Lower right abdominal pain

Lower right abdominal pain is usually acute. The pain can occur abruptly or chronic in nature. The other usual symptoms that might be present include vomiting, nausea, tenderness, constipation, bloating, gas, fever and appetite loss.

Common causes of lower right abdominal pain


Appendicitis is a condition where the appendix is inflamed and has been the usual cause of lower right abdominal pain.

The pain is described as achy and starts around the umbilicus and radiates to the lower right abdominal area. The pain becomes worse and acute a few hours along with tenderness to the touch.

The treatment for appendicitis is a surgical procedure called appendectomy which involves removal of the inflamed appendix.


Lower right abdominal pain

Constipation is known to cause lower right abdominal pain. The condition causes difficulty in passing hardened stools. Aside from the abdominal pain, other symptoms include straining, bloating, rectal pressure and pain during a bowel movement.

The pain is usually relieved after a bowel movement. It is also important to increase the intake of dietary fiber. In addition, stool softeners or laxatives can also be used.

Kidney stones

The formation of kidney stones can cause abdominal pain in the lower right region. The pain is usually intense at the area beneath the right ribs, back and right side. The pain might even radiate towards the groin.

As part of treatment, it involves increased intake of water. Pain medications are also given to alleviate the pain. In case larger stones are involved, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy is used which breaks down the stones into small pieces so they can be eliminated via urine.

Kidney infection

An infection in the bladder or any part of the urinary tract can radiate to the kidneys, resulting to an infection that causes inflammation and pain. The condition is managed using antibiotics while pain medications are given for pain relief.

Ovarian cysts

Cysts are sacs filled with fluid that form on the surface of the ovary. These might grow bigger and cause pain, especially if they are twisted.

Ectopic pregnancy

Ectopic pregnancy is a condition in which the fertilized egg is implanted outside the uterus. Once it is implanted in the ovary or fallopian tube, it can cause severe lower right abdominal pain.
