It is important to note that bland foods might not be appealing but they are highly suitable for stomach upset. These foods will allow the stomach and the intestines to heal after some time. Always bear in mind that stomach upset is commonly referred to as gastroenteritis which is a common condition that has various causes that range from eating contaminated food, viruses and certain medications. The symptoms include nausea, abdominal pain and vomiting. In some cases, diarrhea can occasionally occur. In case the stomach upset does not resolve after 3-4 days, it is best to seek medical care.
What is the initial diet?
If the individual is vomiting, the consumption of food must be stopped until the vomiting has eventually passed. The individual should not eat until vomiting has stopped for 6 hours. You can provide the individual with ice chips to suck on to moisten the lips and hydrate the body. Popsicles and hard candy can also help curb the appetite. Always bear in mind that vomiting can cause severe dehydration.
Introduction of bland foods
Start by taking small sips of fluids such as water, bouillon, flat ginger ale or apple juice. Foods that can be easily digested can be slowly added after the first day. It is best to stick with foods such as bananas, rice, applesauce or toast. These are considered as binding foods that will harden the stool. Take note that bananas are rich in potassium which is usually lost through vomiting and diarrhea. The individual should eat foods that are high in carbohydrates instead of protein and fat since they can be easily digested by the stomach
Addition of solid foods
Once the individual feels better, you can add more bland foods to the diet on the second and third day. The meat that will be given should include boneless and skinless chicken or broiled or baked meats. Even baked potatoes and hard boiled eggs are also recommended.
Avoid adding seasoning, spices or large amounts of salt to the food. Dairy products such as creamy soup, yogurt and milk must be avoided as well since they can cause the symptoms to recur. You can add more foods to the diet slowly including vegetables and fruits. Eating bland foods too long can cause the individual to become malnourished. If the symptoms return at any time, restart the diet from the start.
When to seek medical attention
A stomach upset can indicate a possible serious condition. In case the diarrhea is green or bloody, it is best to consult a doctor. The symptoms should not last more than three days. A fever of 101 degrees or one that lasts longer than three days is also an indication of a serious illness that entails assessment by a healthcare professional. It is best to take part in first aid training today so that you are prepared.
